EWC Lancers Win Region IX Championship

EWC Lancers Win Region IX Championship

Eastern Wyoming College's golf team won the Region IX District/Region Tournament held April 25-26 at the Walking Stick Golf Course in Pueblo, Colorado. The Lancers had three golfers in the top five and Lancer Joshua Chapman was the top individual golfer.

Chapman finished with a +1 to win the tournament, while fellow Lancers Taiki Sugaware finished third with a +5, and Braylon Bingham finished fourth with a +6.

"Josh played well all three rounds, taking home another win this spring season," EWC Golf Coach Zach Smith said. "Taiki and Braylon were close behind."

Lancers Ryker Dunkley, Tytan Birchell, and Leander Suttka also competed at the Region IX tournament.

As a team the Lancers finished the tournament in first place with a +19. Otero Community College finished second with a +45 and Central Wyoming College finished third with a +60.

"The guys played some great golf to finish our region/district play on top," Smith said. "We got off to a very good start at the region/district tournament on Thursday which was a 36 hole day. We jumped out to a big lead going into day two, which was 18 holes, so there wasn't a ton of pressure going into day two. It was a great way to finish the regular season as we prepare for the national championship."

Throughout the season the team has done a great job, Smith added. "So many guys have stepped up throughout the season to help the team. You have to have depth on your team if you want to compete at a high level in golf and I feel like we've had some great depth all season long. We ended up having five out of the eight players on the first and second all region teams."

"This has been a special year. They set a team record for low score at the first tournament of the year in the fall, tied it this spring and a week later shattered the record they set this year by shooting -21 par."

The Lancers will head to Hobbs, New Mexico on May 11 to prepare for the national championship.
