EWC Golf Teams Sweep CWC Invite
Eastern Wyoming College’s men’s and women’s golf teams won the Central Wyoming College tournament Sept. 10–11 in Riverton, Wyo.
“Both teams played well again this week. The greens were super quick in Riverton, which resulted in too many three-putts, but the team did a great job of adjusting, especially on day two,” EWC Golf Coach Zach Smith said.
Eastern Wyoming College’s Ben Brown won on the men’s side, and EWC’s Jessica Applegarth topped the leaderboard on the women’s side.
“It was fun to see Ben get his first collegiate win,” Smith said. “He has a great attitude and approach to the game. I think we’ll see Ben get some more wins this year.”
Brown won the tournament at 2-under, two strokes ahead of Central Wyoming College’s Tyler Ewell. EWC’s Josh White finished third at 1-over. Teammate Troy Young placed fifth at 6-over, with Lancer Jace Nielsen tied for sixth at 7-over. Lancer Freddie Dancox tied for ninth at 8-over, and Jamie Lambert finished 11th at 9-over.
“The girls played great both days. It’s been fun to see some growth in our second year as a program so far,” Smith said.
On the women’s leaderboard, Applegarth finished on top at 12-over, ahead of teammate Sara Maciej at 16-over. Lancer Madison Fujimoto finished fifth, followed by teammates Ashlyn Matheson in sixth and Elliann Irick in seventh. Lancer Bailey Watson placed 10th.
“I was happy for Jessica to get her fourth college win,” Smith said. “I cost her a stroke on Thursday with some bad advice, so I’m glad she won. I would have felt terrible if she ended up losing by one stroke. She was great about it, though. She told me she trusted the club choice and that it was fine.”
The Lancers will compete in North Platte this weekend.
