TORRINGTON, Wyo. – The Eastern Wyoming College golf teams dominated the Northeast Junior College Tournament held Oct. 2–3 in Sterling, Colorado, taking first place on both the men's and women's sides.
The EWC men topped the leaderboard with a team score of -1, finishing 11 strokes ahead of Central Wyoming College, who placed second at +10.
"The men's team had their best outing of the year, shooting 10 under par the second day to finish the overall tournament at 1 under par," said EWC golf coach Zach Smith. "Ben, Jamie and Troy came out hot on Friday to help us open up a tight team battle. It was fun to see the momentum and buzz that we had going on the guys' side."
All six Lancer men finished inside the top 20. Troy Young led the team with a third-place finish at -5, two strokes ahead of teammate Ben Brown, who placed fourth. Jamie Lambert finished seventh at +1, followed by Mason Evans in ninth at +3. Landen Gilmore tied for 10th with a +5, while teammates Freddie Dancox finished in 13th place, and Josh White tied for 16th.
"I know we have the guys to get it going and we haven't been able to totally get it going yet, so that was huge for the team," Smith said.
On the women's side, the Lady Lancers captured the team title with a score of +80, well ahead of Central Wyoming College's +123 finish.
Sara Maciej led the field individually, topping the leaderboard at +8. Teammate Madison Fujimoto followed in second at +15, with Ashlyn Matheson in third at +23. Jessica Applegarth tied for fifth, Elliann Irick placed eighth, and Bailey Watson rounded out the top 10.
"The girls have continued to play strong as well," Smith said. "Sara is a machine—she stays very steady along the way and keeps such a great attitude, no matter what's happening on the course. To have Ash, Maddie and Sara all shoot in the 70s on Thursday was another great sign for our golf team."
"I really appreciate the hard work everyone has put in so far this season. I'm excited for both teams moving forward," Smith added.
