Barbee Hits Game Winner

EWC Lancer Basketball - John Barbee

With the clock winding down Monday, Feb. 27, a shot came off the rim with only a few seconds left on the clock. Lancer guard John Barbee grabbed the rebound and put a shot back up and in, giving EWC a 101-99 victor over Casper College.

"I wanted to win so bad," Barbee said.

When teammate Micah Glover pull up for the shot, Barbee thought it was going to go in as he was following, but "I saw it coming off," he said. "It came off the rim perfectly and I laid it in."

"It was a great player making a great play," Barbee's teammate Ryan Swan said.

Swan started the play on the other end of the court. He got the rebound off of a missed Casper free throw, and watching Barbee finish it was "so exciting."

"Moments like that you won't forget," fellow teammate Malik Frederick added.

From the very beginning of the game it was close with the lead going back and forth.

"Casper played really well," Barbee said. "Both teams played well and it came down to the last second. I am so happy we came down with the win."

Lancer basketball coach Tom Andersen describes John as an "athletic player who is very competitive. The put back to help win the Casper game was a real hustle play that he made."

The Tacoma, Washington freshman isn't the first Barbee to play for EWC. John's father, John III, played for the Lancers from 1991-1993. The Lancers finished second in the Region both years, Coach Andersen said.

Barbee's whole family are basketball players, his twin sister plays at a college in Texas, his older brother plays, his dad played, and he has a younger brother still in high school who plays.

Following in his dad's footsteps at EWC is "super cool," Barbee said. "My dad and I are super close."

Dad, and the whole family, watched the livestream of Monday's game.

"After the game they called," Barbee said. "They were super excited."
