Season ends in Casper for women's basketball

The Eastern Wyoming College women's basketball team lost in the second round of the Region IX Tournament Thursday in Casper.

The Lancers, seeded third in the North, lost 84-75 to Otero Junior College, the second-seeded South team.

Freshman forward Montse Gutierrez Ibanez and freshman guard Ane Esnal Aguirre led the Lancers with 18 points each. Ibanez added a team-best eight rebounds while Aguirre tallied a game-high seven steals while finishing second on the team with five rebounds. 

Ibanez was 4-for-7 on 3-pointers, accounting for all but two of Eastern's made threes. The Lancers were just 6-of-24 (25%) from deep and 30-of-70 (42.9%) overall from the field.

Sophomore Paula Martinez Sanz and freshman Emilia Axelsson each scored 10 points, freshman Emma Strom added seven while freshman Raleigh Basart and sophomore Mar Bastida Olivares each tallied six.

EWC finished 17-14 overall and look poised to build around a strong freshmen core for the 2020-21 season.
